Students Put Heart and "Sole" In Haiti-Bound Shoes

COCONUT CREEK (CBS4) - Haitians will have a little extra pep in their step thanks to some uniquely decorated shoes.

Students from Miami-Dade College and Miami Central High School joined forces to decorate and donate pairs of shoes to Haiti through the non-profit charity Food for the Poor at their distribution center in Coconut Creek.

"It is important for the students of Miami Central to help with the project", said Miami Central High student Deion Dingle. "They painted and they were creative about it. So, it is the way to get everyone involved."

"Through the service learning project, more than 1,130 pairs of shoes were collected and prepped for decoration.

When they get these shoes that are beautifully designed, beautifully painted and decorated I think it will give them a lift of spirit. They will feel that perhaps they are living in a better condition than what reality dictates", said Angel Alomo, Executive Director of Food For The Poor.

Representatives from Food For The Poor also took the opportunity to educate students about the recent cholera outbreak in the aftermath of Haiti's devastating earthquake in January.

In addition to the shoes, the organization is also sending clean bottled water to the severely infected Artibonite region to contain the spread of the disease.

Food For The Poor is also responsible for already installing ten solar powered water filtration units, with another ten units on the way.

More than 250 people have died from the cholera outbreak began earlier this month.
