Stay Safe Before And After A Hurricane
MIAMI (CBS4) - In the case of a hurricane, every resident and visitor will need to have a variety of supplies to handle any emergencies that may occur before or after the storm.
It's important to remember that as a storm approaches, while it is in the area, and after the storm leaves with damage in it's wake, emergency services may not be able to help you. It may be too dangerous for ambulances to respond, and fire-rescue will not send trucks and people out into the storm. You need to be able to help yourself.
Below is a list of items experts say is necessary to stay safe.
FIRST AID KIT:
A basic first aid kit for hurricanes should include the following:
- Sterile gauze
- Bandages of various sizes
- Antiseptic Spray
- Burn Spray
- Mosquito Repellant
- Benadryl (Diphenhydramine) 25mg Tablets for allergic reactions
- Antibiotic Ointment: For cuts and scrapes
- Over the counter pain relievers like Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and Tylenol
- Bandage Tape
- Alcohol swabs/Alcohol wipes
- Lip Baum
- SPK Sunscreen
- Scissors, tweezers
- Thermometer
- Ice pack
- Clean or purified water
Please remember many injuries occur while preparing for a storm, or cleaning up the aftermath of a storm. Use power tools, generators and other devices with caution. Always use thick work gloves to put up hurricane shutters and take them down.
