State's Supreme Court Set To Swear-In First Cuban-American Chief Justice
TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – Jorge Labarga, set to be the state's first Cuban-American Chief of Justice, will be sworn-in Monday by the Florida Supreme Court.
Labarga, who succeeds Chief Justice Ricky Polston, was elected as the 56th Chief Justice in January and will begin his two-year term Monday.
A swearing in ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Tallahassee.
Chief Justice Polston will remain on the beach. Labarga's election followed a tradition of electing the next senior justice who hasn't yet held the position.
Former Gov. Charlie Crist appointed Labarga to the high court in 2009.
Labarga is from West Palm Beach. He served as a trial court judge and then briefly as an appeals judge before he was appointed to the Florida Supreme Court.
