State To End Carpool Lanes In South Broward
FT, LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Starting next Monday, you'll be able to drive in any lane you like at any time of the day on I-95 in the southern half of Broward County, as the state permanently ends carpool restrictions on that part of the interstate.
The cancellation of the carpool lanes, which reserve certain lanes for high-passenger cars or hybrids during rush hour, is part of the plan to build toll lanes on the interstate similar to toll-based lanes in Miami-Dade.
The state cancelled the HOV/carpool lanes in Miami-Dade, eventually replacing them with toll express lanes where the toll increased as the traffic volume did.
Starting next Monday, I-95 between Sunrise boulevard and the Miami-Dade County line will have no restrictions, and drivers can drive in any lane at any time during the day.
When the express lanes are complete in Broward, expected in 2014, carpoolers and drivers of high-efficiency vehicles will get a free pass, while other drivers can pay a toll of up to $7 to use the lanes.
Despite the cost, the lanes have proven popular in Miami-Dade, generating unexpected extra revenue for the state.
