State Proposing Measures To Protect Sharks
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) - In light of Florida's dwindling shark populations, the state is considering a number measures to safeguard their future.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission plans to hold a series of workshops around the state so the public can comment on a number of shark protection proposals.
One proposal would require fishermen to use circle hooks instead of j-hooks for catch-and-release fishing to do less harm to the shark, according to the Sun-Sentinel. Another proposal would put a limit on chumming when fishing for sharks from shore.
One of the more controversial measures would be a state ban on catching tiger sharks and hammerheads in Florida waters.
Two workshops are planned for South Florida. The first will be held June 21, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Musuem, located next to the Bass Pro Shop in Dania Beach. The second workshop will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Key West on June 22nd at the Harvey Government Center.
