Sports Agenda for Thursday (9/6/12)
Big Story:
Well, the NFL returned last night and the Cowboys upset the Giants. Call me when the Cowboys win in January over the Giants. Plus, the Marlins hit rock bottom, yes really. And my college football picks including the lead pipe lock for Week 2.
Quote of the Day:
"It takes some brass to attack a guy for doing what you did." – former President Bill Clinton
Marlins: (vs. Milwaukee, 12:40 pm.)
How bad are the Marlins?
Tickets for last night's game were going for as low as $0.20 a ticket.
Tickets for today's game are roughly the same price.
For comparison purposes, the cheapest Dolphins tickets were around $40 the last time I looked and there is no hope for them being any good this year.
It's really kinda sad too for Giancarlo Stanton.
He's stuck in this miserable franchise for several more years and no matter how well he plays, the team doesn't seem to be able to answer the call.
Course on the bright side, two tickets to a game for under $0.50 isn't bad, too bad you'll pay about 30 times that for parking.
And let's not even get into the cost of concessions…
Heck even MLB.tv is giving away today's game for free.
24.5 games back and no hope for the future.
Oh and the guy you got for Hanley Ramirez….he's 4-11 on the season with a 4.44 ERA.
That's gotta sting.
NFL:
Yes, the Cowboys won over the Giants.
*yawn*
Big deal. Like I said, talk to me in January when the Cowboys are out of the playoffs.
And for those who are wondering….Tony Romo is NOT one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
He's quite possibly the most over-rated quarterback in the league, well outside of Tim Tebow, and not an elite quarterback.
College Football:
Ah yes, it's time for our weekend college football pickoff.
Let's review for a second, last week we were 15-1, which was a pretty good week to start out.
But, most of those games were gimmes and now things begin to get a little more difficult as conference play kicks in and teams aren't playing Sister Mary's School for the Blind in order to impress the BCS computers.
Without further adieu, here we go.
Auburn over Mississippi State
Miami over Kansas State
Virginia over penn State
Ohio State over UCF
Michigan over Air Force
Florida over Texas A&M
Iowa over Iowa State
Notre Dame over Purdue
USC over Syracuse
Alabama over Western Kentucky
FIU over Akron
Oregon State over Wisconsin
UTEP over Ole Miss
LSU over Washington
Vanderbilt over Northwestern
Middle Tennessee over FAU
Oregon over Fresno State
Upset of the Week
Missouri over Georgia
Okay, before you get started, yes I'm a Mizzou homer, but let me explain why I think they can pull the upset.
First, the crowd is going to be absolutely electric and in recent years, Georgia has struggled mightily on the road.
Second, regardless of what you may think…the 'Zou does have some athletes who can run with the best of the SEC. That said, the offensive line is going to have one HELLUVA BIG challenge trying to block the three man front of Georgia.
But I think it can be done.
What I'm more interested in is seeing if Mizzou's front can stop the run against Georgia and make them one dimensional.
Remember, although Missouri is known for a spread offense, they have been one of the most balanced teams in recent years. Last week they ran for more than they passed for.
However, in this game, Mizzou quarterback James Franklin will have to throw the football and do it well to win. He has 6' T.J. Moe, who reminds people of Wes Welker; 6'4" L'Damian Washington, who is a burner; and 6'6" Dorial Green-Beckham, who is a mature version of Randy Moss, yes he's that good.
Georgia could be without most of their starting secondary unless Richt goes against his suspensions and decided to play Baccari Rambo.
It's going to break down to line play from both teams.
If Georgia's defensive line can collapse the Tigers' offensive line, it's all over with for Mizzou. If Mizzou can't stand up to Georgia's physical blocking, things could get ugly for Mizzou.
I don't know, but I just think the Tigers can pull off the upset Saturday evening.
So mark it down, Mizzou comes into the SEC and pulls off the monumental upset of a top 10 ranked Georgia team.
At least that's what I'm hoping for on Saturday.
