Results In For Special Elections In Pembroke Pines & Margate

BROWARD COUNTY (CBS4) -- The results are in for a special elections held Tuesday in the Broward cities of Margate and Pembroke Pines to fill commission seats.

For District 4 in Pembroke Pines, former commissioner Angelo Castillo reclaimed his old seat, overwhelmingly defeating Mike Rubinstein. Castillo was a city commissioner, but resigned to run for a county commission seat. When he lost that election to Barbara Sharief, he decided he wanted his old seat back.

In Margate, voters decided who will fill the seat of Commissioner Art Bross who died last year. His term ends November 2012.

Lesa "Le" Peerman narrowly forged ahead 12 other candidates to win the seat.

The other 12 candidates. They are: Brian Donahue, John W. Hall III, Darryl Hanna, Phil Hylander, Mario Imperatore, Anthony "Coach Tony" Lliteras, Patricia Maher, Julia "Judy" McKeone, Frank Messana, Robert Perkis, Rich Popovic and Manny Torres.

Margate voters also decided three referendum issues.

They decided for a referendum limiting city officials to serving three consecutive four year terms. They also voted for allowing two commission terms to be shortened, one time only, so elections are staggered.

Lastly, they voted to allow the commission to appoint someone to fill an unexpectedly vacant seat until the next regularly scheduled election.

The special election is expected to cost the city $80,000, according to The Sun Sentinel.
