Space Shuttle Atlantis Enters Retirement Mode
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER (CBS4) – The space shuttle Atlantis has been moved to one of Kennedy Space Center's high-tech garage's to be prepared for future public display at Kennedy's Visitor Complex.
Following the shuttle's final landing which brought a close to America's space shuttle program, Atlantis was moved inside Orbiter Processing Facility-2 where technicians will spend the next few weeks reconfiguring Atlantis.
Atlantis completed its 33rd and the shuttle program's 135th and final mission with a predawn landing on July 21st. Atlantis flew to the International Space Station on mission STS 135 and delivered more than 9,400 pounds of equipment and supplies for the next year.
The shuttle Endeavour is going to the California Science Center in Los Angeles and Discovery is being given to the Smithsonian Institution.
Enterprise, a prototype shuttle used for test flights more than three decades ago will be sent to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York. Enterprise has been on display at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington.
