"South Pacific" Sails Into Broward Center
MIAMI (CBS4) - Set on a tropical island during World War II, South Pacific is the romantic story of 2 couples in love during the turbulent time of war and prejudices.
The musical centers on an American nurse stationed at a U.S. Naval base during the war who falls in love with an expatriate French plantation owner, but struggles to accept his mixed-race children.
CBS4's Lisa Petrillo caught up with some of the cast as they rehearsed Tuesday.
Marcelo Guzzo stars as Frenchman Emile DeBeque, and Jennie Sophia plays his love nurse Nellie Forbush.
"I stumble across this Frenchman named Emile Debeque and in that some enchanted evening its love at first sight," said Jennie Sophia of her character.
With music by Rodgers and Hammerstein, this classic and timeless story which first debuted on Broadway in 1949 is now fresh and new aimed those familiar with the story and also for the young generation who are not.
"The great grandparents bring the children and they want to show them the music and the show that they fall in love with. They high expectations for this show because it lives in the hearts of the American people," said Marcelo Guzzo.
South Pacific is on at The Broward Center for the Performing Arts now through April 22.
