Local Students Hope To S-P-E-L-L Success
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Students from across South Florida will put their spelling skills to the test starting Tuesday for the Miami Herald's 73rd annual spelling bee competition.
Students from more than 300 elementary and middle school from Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe Counties will take part in the event which is being staged over two separate days.
On Tuesday, March 12th, over 125 spellers from Broward County public and private schools from grades 4 through 8 will participate in the Broward Spelling Bee at the Signature Grand in Davie.
CBS4 Meteorologist Jeff Beradelli will emcee for the afternoon session.
The Miami-Dade/Monroe Spelling Bee will host more than 250 spelling champions from grades 4 through 8 from public and private schools in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties. The Miami-Dade/Monroe Bee will be held on Wednesday, March 20th at Jungle Island.
CBS4's Josh Benson and Vanessa Borge will emcee the championship along with Miami Herald columnist Ana Veciana-Suarez.
The champions of the middle school competitions will represent Miami-Dade/Monroe and Broward counties at the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C.
The middle school champions in Broward and Miami-Dade will also receive a free one-year subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica Online for Kids, the Samuel Louis Sugarman Award, a $100 Series EE U.S. Savings Bond and a Webster's Third New International Dictionary. The elementary school champions will receive Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition.
