South Florida Set For International Space Station Sightings

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Stargazers should be able to see the International Space Station this week soaring over South Florida.
According to NASA, there will be three sighting opportunities starting Wednesday night.
These are the times the ISS will be visible to the naked eye, weather permitting.
- Wed Jan 7, 5:01 AM -- visible for 1 minute. The max height will be 19°. It'll appear at 19 above SE and disappear at 18 above ESE.
- Wed Jan 7, 6:35 AM -- visible for 5 minutes. The max height will be 20°. It'll appear at 10 above W and disappear at 10 above N.
- Thu Jan 8, 5:47 AM -- visible for 2 minutes. The max height will be 39°. It'll appear at 39 above NNW and disappear at 12 above NNE.
The Space Station orbits at 17,500 mph above Earth.
The ISS, which is as big as a football field, generally looks like a very bright point of light traveling from west to east. How do you know it's not a star – it doesn't twinkle and moves against the stars in the background.
