Miami Palmetto Sr. High Students Throw Pep Rally To Honor Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson For Historic Supreme Court Confirmation
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Students at Miami Palmetto Senior High held a pep rally on Friday to honor alumna Judge Kentanji Brown Jackson for her historic Supreme Court confirmation.
Judge Jackson will become the first Black woman to sit on the country's highest court.
Judge Jackson is a product of Miami-Dade Public Schools. She's a graduate of Palmetto Senior High School, where she was on the debate team.
The day of her confirmation left past and present students ecstatic.
"Ketanji Brown Jackson came from our school and these halls and studied here," said Jason Salguero who is also on the debate team, just like Judge Jackson. "It's crazy especially because I'm in that same environment that she was in. Hopefully, a good omen."
The Palmetto Panthers marching band, cheerleaders, and even the panther mascot dressed up for Friday's pep rally in the school courtyard.
"We decided to add a judge's gown to represent Ketanji Brown Jackson because she used to go here and we're so proud," said student Catherine Bales.
When Judge Jackson graduated in the 1980s, she wrote in her senior yearbook, "I want to go into law and eventually have a judicial appointment."
Current students are excited about what her historic accomplishment could mean for their own futures.
"As a minority, as a woman, I feel so important that she represents us as a community and of Miami as well," said student Ellen Li.
