South Florida Not Getting Jobless Back To Work
WASHINGTON DC (CBS4) - As nation's unemployment rate slowly sinks below the double digit mark, here in South Florida the picture is not as encouraging.
According to federal figures released last Friday the South Florida metropolitan area, which includes Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, had an unemployment rate of 11.5 percent; an increase of .7 percent from January 2010. The 12 month increase was the second was second largest in the nation, second only to New Orleans, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.
But there was some good news. The 11.5 unemployment rate was actually down .3 percent from December 2010. According to the U.S. Labor Department, statewide Florida had a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 11.9 percent in January 2011 which was far above the nationwide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 8.9 percent in February 2011.
Puerto Rico had the highest unemployment rate in the country, and its territories, at 15.9 percent in January; North Dakota had the lowest unemployment at 3.8 percent.
