South Florida Non-Profit Empowering Local Women
MIAMI (CBS4) - A South Florida non-profit organization is sponsoring women from local shelters for a day of empowerment.
Empowering Women, Empowering Voices is hosting a conference this weekend targeting a growing demographic of women who have been battered and economically challenged to teach them the importance of practical and realistic ways of improving their lives and discovering their voice.
The key note speaker is Miss Kay Mullins of Columbus, Ohio. Her estranged husband tried to kill her while she slept on the couch, with their children sleeping only a few feet away.
"He stepped over the children poured lighter fluid on top of me set me on fire and stepped back over them crept out and no one saw him. My son pushed me outside and rolled me around the ground. I remember hearing her screaming mommy is on fire."
Mullins was in a coma for 26 days, in the hospital for three months, had 31 surgeries and discovered that she was meant to spread her message of survival and hope.
Mullins' now ex-husband Derrick Mason is now behind bars serving an 18 year sentence. She says she has forgiven him.
"I actually like myself better now then I did before. I want to get out the message to women and men that any type of tragedy that happens in their lives that you can move past it.
Mullis will share her story at the Empowering Women, Empowering Voices conference that will be held on May 14, 2011 at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center at 1170 Monroe Street in Hollywood from 8:30-6:30.
Tickets are $25.
