South Florida Memorials, Concerts On Haiti Earthquake Anniversary
MIAMI – It's been four years since the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti and killed more than 300,000 people.
In honor of the many lives that were lost on January 12th, 2010 several memorials and concerts will be held Sunday across South Florida.
The students and staff members of Lynn University will hold a moment of silence 4:51 p.m., when the actual earthquake happened, at the Remembrance Plaza in memory of the four students and two professors who died that in Port au Prince . The crew was there as a part of the Journey of Hope-Haiti, a mission that was dedicated to helping those in need.
Monday, January 13th, the school will have its fourth annual "Knights Unite Day of Caring" to continue the crew's legacy of community service.
In downtown Hollywood, Arts Park at Young Circle welcomes family and friends to come out and enjoy music from local bands and artists at their annual Hollywood Healing Haiti Concert.
The concert, put together by Love Hope Prosper and Hollywood CARES for Haiti, kicks off at 1 p.m. The proceeds will benefit Project Papillon. The organization runs a Port au Prince orphanage and school for children affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as a community center opened after the 2010 earthquake.
Stanton Memorial Baptist church will also host a benefit concert at North Miami Senior High School at 6:30 p.m. to raise money to purchase houses for orphan children in the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince.
The concert will feature the renowned "Echoes of Praise," Stanton Memorial's choir and other local choirs and dance ministries.
Also in North Miami, the Haitian-American community will gather to march with survivors of the earthquake to remember and pray for the people of Haiti. Community members will meet at the corner of 54th Street and North Miami Avenue at 4:30 p.m. and march to the Notre Dame Church for a 5:30 p.m. mass followed by cultural presentations at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.
