South Florida High Schools Rise To The Top
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – One South Florida high school topped state rankings and several others were on the top 50 list of U.S. News & World Report's Best Florida high schools for 2012.
U.S. News worked with the American Institutes for Research and rated the schools based on student-to-teacher ratio and college preparedness.
Miami-Dade County's Design and Architecture Senior High (DASH) stole the top spot as the number one school in the state; it ranked number 16 in the country.
Coming in at number two in the state, and number 26 in the country, was another Miami-Dade school, the Young Women's Preparatory Academy.
"Out of 990 high schools in the state of Florida, we have no fewer than 25 schools in the top 100 right here in Miami-Dade," Superintendent Alberto Carvalho told CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald Wednesday.
Other Miami-Dade high schools that made it on the list were:
• International Studies Charter School, No. 7
• MAST Academy, No. 11
• Coral Reef Senior High, No. 15
• Doral Performing Arts & Entertainment Academy, No. 16
• New World School Of The Arts, No. 17
• Miami Beach Senior High, No. 28.
Several Broward schools also made high national and state rankings.
Three ranked in the top 50 in the state: Cypress Bay High came in at No. 19; Pompano Beach High at No. 20 and McFatter Technical High School at No. 24. All three were among the top 400 schools in the country.
