South Dade, Keys Residents Stock Up Before The Storm
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – While it's still too early to tell what sort of impact Tropical Storm Isaac will have on South Florida and the Keys, some folks aren't waiting around.
Thursday morning bottled water flew off the shelves at a Walmart store in Florida City.
"I was here during Andrew and I don't want to be caught with my pants down," said Molly Garder. "The last time I had problems getting cat food so I'm stocking up, you never know what's going to happen."
"I came to get a cooler and a little stove," said Harold Lane as he waited to check out.
Melanie Boling said she wanted to be prepared for whatever happens.
"We went through Andrew and there were things we didn't think about during that, so you know, so I'm probably over doing it, but I'd rather over do it," said Boling.
Emergency managers in the tri-county area recommend that everyone check their hurricane kit, look over their shutters and test their generators if they have one.
Miami-area residents are stocking up, too.
Boling, a mother of two, said surviving Andrew taught her how to be prepared and she didn't want to take any chances.
"I didn't think of properly storing papers and books and things like that, a lot of pictures got ruined," said Boling.
On her shopping spree she picked up a few essentials.
"I did get some envelopes for sealing up papers, I bought some Clorox wipes and some push lights which come with batteries," said Boling. "I even bought a whistle. I bought this because if something happens, I'm hoping it won't, but I want to have a whistle around my neck so if someone needs to find me that is my sign."
Walmart management at the Florida City store said they were running low on water but a new shipment would be arriving late Thursday or early Friday.
