Sony Ericsson Becoming Cash Cow For Miami-Dade
KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (CBSMiami) – The Sony Ericsson Open has slowly become one of the most lucrative money-makers for Miami-Dade County. This year will be no exception as more than 330,000 are expected to attend the annual tennis tournament this year.
"It beats going to London or Paris and all the players are here it's an amazing opportunity," said Terri Mallioux, who came from Arkansas for the tournament.
Lloyd Brooks is from Chicago and he's been coming to this tournament for years. He said the money he spends is worth the experience.
Tournament director, Adam Barret, believes the Sony Ericsson will put $400 million dollars in the economy this year.
"That economic impact is similar to what you see for the Super Bowl, but we came back every year; we do 16,000 hotel room nights and 4800 hours of coverage to the world," Berret said.
One of the reasons the Sony Ericsson open is so successful is because it appeals to the masses. There's something for everyone here – weather your taste is popcorn or crab – it's all here. The economic impact of this tournament not only felt annually but long term.
Frank Nero, president of Beacon Council said, "For companies who are looking to relocate here is quality of life – one of the components are arts and leisure activities and having a premiere tennis tournament is one of those key ingredients."
