Something Extra: Why We Should Remember MLK
MIAMI (CBS4) - We often forget the meaning of certain days, the meaning that turned them into holidays.
Christmas gets lost in Santa and the presents, Thanksgiving in the turkey and football, Memorial Day in the barbecuing and the beginning of summer, Easter in the bunnies, baskets and bonnets.
Their real significance is ignored, often forgotten. We must not forget.
Today, we should remember the real reason many of us didn't have to work and kids got to stay home from school.
We honor a man and his mission, a man and his dream that one day children will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character, that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed that all men are created equal.
Greatly thanks to Martin Luther King, his leadership and his inspiration, America has taken great strides toward achieving that dream.
Seventeen minutes is all it takes to listen to Reverend King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Find it online and watch. It is still as powerfully inspiring as it was almost fifty years ago.
