Something Extra: Why A Painting Makes Me Want To Scream
MIAMI (CBS4) - I'm screaming about "The Scream"!
I'm not talking about the horror movie... what I'm screaming about is the iconic painting and what experts think it will sell for tonight at auction.
The numbers are astonishing: "The Scream" could go for anywhere from eighty million to more than two hundred million dollars at Sotheby's in New York.
The pastel is one of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch's four versions of a man holding his head and screaming under a streaked, blood-red sky. It has become a symbol of human anxiety. The other three versions are in Norwegian museums.
It's one of the most famous images in art history, much imitated on Halloween masks, by Macauley Culkin in "Home Alone" and by Homer Simpson.
"The Scream" stands a chance to break the record price for a painting sold at auction which is about one hundred six million.
But it will be tough to beat the most expensive painting ever sold... Cezanne's "The Card Players." It went for two hundred fifty million! Makes me want to scream!
