Something Extra: Negativity Nightmare
MIAMI (CBS4) - Winston Churchill said "democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried."
Floridians have been bombarded by the worst of democracy on radio, television and in phone calls to their homes. The steady barrage of negativity has been unrelenting and just wait and see what it will be like in the general election.
The irony is that when push comes to shove the policy differences between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are relatively minor and they will almost certainly support whoever gets the G.O.P. nomination. But the prize of the presidency forces even candidates of the same party to attack any perceived weakness, so it gets ugly quickly.
We all complain about our politicians, but you've got to be a masochist to run for office these days.
With the brutality of the attacks, is there any wonder most of our best and brightest shun the political spotlight? That spotlight is so harsh, political operatives would find ways to attack the Dalai Lama and Mother Theresa.
