Something Extra: Inspiring Sportsmanship
MIAMI (CBS4) - With so many stories on the news about human misbehavior, it's always a treat to end our newscast with a story about the triumph of the human spirit.
This inspirational story comes from this weekend's high school state track meet at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus.
As Meghan Vogel neared the finish line of the thirty two hundred meter race, she saw Arden McMath collapse in front of her.
Instead of finishing... the high school junior stopped... lifted McMath... and carried her to finish line.
As the crowd realized what was happening, everyone stood and the roaring ovation grew with each step.
By rule, a runner is automatically disqualified for aiding another runner.
Nobody even considered disqualifying Meghan.
Earlier that day, Meghan had become the surprise Division-3 state champion in the sixteen hundred meters.
But she said helping her competitor across the finish line in the other race was a lot more satisfying than winning the state championship.
State champions come and go. Great feats of sportsmanship are rarely forgotten.
