Something Extra: Gekko Goes Fed?
MIAMI (CBS4) - "I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV" is one of the most famous lines ever from a television commercial.
Now, we have a public service announcement that should begin with "I'm not an inside trader, but I play one on film."
"Greed, for lack of a better word, is good." That, of course, was said by Gordon Gekko, played by Michael Douglas, in the movie "Wall Street." Those words captured the excesses of the go-go eighties.
Now, Gekko has been enlisted by, of all people, the FBI!
A stern Michael Douglas delivers the message that our economy is increasingly dependent on the success and integrity of the financial markets.
He offers help to people to identify financial fraud and asks the public to help identify insider trading.
Some are saying this is silly, but the issue is serious and, thanks to the movie star, it will get a lot more attention. So Gordon Gekko cooperating with the FBI is probably a good thing.
