Something Extra: Disco Deaths
MIAMI (CBS4) - Giant... Legend... words used too often to describe people who aren't. But Donna Summer and Robin Gibb sure were.
Summer was the first huge star I ever saw in person, stunningly making her way in a white turban through an overcrowded third-world airport. I've never forgotten.
And while I am no fan of disco, I was a big fan of hers.
By the time I met Robin Gibb and all the Bee Gees, I'd spent years working on a national morning show and meeting famous people was part of the job.
But when the three Gibb brothers came in, I was surprisingly starstruck. Watching them sing in that small New York studio was a thrill.
Their music spanned parts of five decades, from their Beatles-inspired ballads of the sixties and early seventies to their Saturday Night Fever disco.
They were the only musicians ever to have five songs in the top ten at one time and Robin was probably the most talented of the trio.
His mother will now have buried three of her sons: the youngest, Andy, a pop star in his own right, and the Bee Gees twins, Robin and Maurice.
Summer and Gibb... two real giants... two real legends... gone too soon.
