Soccer Superstars Team Up With Aspiring Players At Soccer Camp
MIAMI (CBS4)- Thousands of children have participated in an internationally renowned summer camp located right in South Florida. Some of those kids will get the chance to showcase their skills and gain insights from soccer superstars, including Mia Hamm.
The FC Barcelona Youth Soccer Camp has had nearly 3,000 participants since it opened its doors at Kendall Soccer Park in 2008, representing children who have traveled from more than 12 countries across the globe and from states throughout the United States to attend the camp.
Superstar Mia Hamm joined soccer team FC Barcelona for a youth soccer clinic at Kendall Soccer Park Tuesday.
"They're having fun," Hamm said. "You hear kids laughing and talking and that's what it is all about."
Hamm and the Barcelona team are hoping to pass on life lessons to the young players.
"I think it gave me confidence," she said. "I was a shy kid. It helped me set goals."
Hamm has had more international goals in her career than any other player, male or female, in the history of U.S. soccer. She showed off her skills for more than 250 kids, ages 6-years-old to 14-years-old, enrolled in the FC Barcelona Youth Soccer Camp.
"Respecting the game, respecting each other and that means playing your best," Hamm said.
Approximately 320 kids are expected to graduate from the summer soccer camp when the session ends on Friday.
"It's my favorite sport," Riccardo Linaro a young aspiring soccer star said. "You just get to play and pass and meet other people,"
The FC Barcelona Team will be going head to head with Chivas de Guadalajara using their soccer skills. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sun Life Stadium. Tickets are still on sale.
