So. Florida Airports Rank Poorly For Holiday Travel

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) -- The dreaded holiday travel season is upon us.

And besides packing bags, navigating through parking lots and dealing with enhanced security procedures here's another thing to think about -- South Florida's two major airports received low marks in a new online report.

According to the TheDailyBeast.com, Miami International Airport ranks second worst for holiday travel. The report claims the airport has the worst on time record for arrivals and the longest average wait time to get through security.

Traveler Hahly Pichardo said he has experienced some of those issues.

"The time that we waste on these airports is ridiculous," Pichardo said. "There's a lot of more people who travel for business out of Fort Lauderdale because it's a lot faster than here."

Speaking of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, the report ranks the airport tenth worst for holiday travel based on a poor arrival time for flights.

However, airport spokesman Greg Meyer explained that those numbers might be skewed.

"If there's a delay coming to us, what can we do," he told CBS 4's Carey Codd. "It's out of our control."

Travelers we spoke with at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood said they have not experienced many issues.

"Once of twice there's been some delay but for the most part it moves," said Ronny Platovsky. "Compared to New York, it's significantly better."

Harmon Wasserman flew into Fort Lauderdale Monday evening with his family. His flight was early and he said he's seen major improvements at the airport, especially in terms of retrieving baggage.

"Many times we've had to wait as much as 45 minutes and today was 5 minutes," he said.

According to Meyer, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood will see nearly half a million travelers from Tuesday through Monday -- a 7% increase over last year.

One more reason for travelers to pack a little patience with their pants and sweaters.
