Snowstorms In Midwest, Northeast Cause Travel Chaos In South Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A wicked winter storm has cancelled or delayed hundreds of flights in South Florida as travel plans for thousands of people finishing South Florida vacations were upended Thursday.
The storm -- predicted to drop up to two feet of snow in some areas -- delayed or cancelled flights to Chicago, Milwaukee, Boston, New York and Toronto among other cities.
Janet Kaschuck was hopeful that the storm would allow her another night in the Florida heat rather than return to the weather in Canada.
"We don't know what to do," she said. "We could either go somewhere if we knew it was to be cancelled and we could have some fun or we could just keep on going to the different terminals."
Joyann Chandler was stuck for hours with four children trying to get home to Boston. She remained in good spirits throughout.
"We went from 70 degree weather to 2 feet of snow," she said. "Should be fun."
At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport more than 110 flights were delayed with another 44 cancelled. At Miami International Airport, more than 30 flights were delayed and another 16 cancelled.
One passenger at MIA said she waited in line at least 2 hours to rebook her flight to New York. Another passenger -- Jonah Donovan -- told CBS 4 News that he was ready to return to his home.
"Gotta be patient and see what happens," he said. "I wanna get home."
Some passengers read, others played games while 10-month-old Adeline Yets napped. Her parents said she was exhausted from traveling and since their flight to Milwaukee was cancelled they were excited to get another night in South Florida.
"We get an extra night in Florida and she gets to spend the night with her family, too," said Dakota Balistreri.
Airport officials say if you're flying Friday you will need to keep in close contact with your airline or check the airport websites to keep up to date on all the delays and cancellations.
