Small Plane Makes Emergency Landing In Bay Near Turkey Point
HOMESTEAD (CBSMiami) – A scary ride for four people aboard a small plane after it went down Sunday in Biscayne Bay.
It happened around noon near the Turkey Point nuclear power plant.
Jim Peters with the FAA said the Cessna (C337) went down 2.2 miles from the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. The plane, which was headed to Key West International Airport from North Perry Airport in Hollywood, lost power in its rear engine. When the plane hit the water, it flipped.
The FAA will investigate the cause of the engine failure.
The Coast Guard said the four people who were on the plane were picked up by a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue boat and taken to a nearby the marina. All had minor bumps, scrapes and bruises.
The people were reportedly standing on the wings of the half sunken plane when help arrived.
TowBoat U.S. South Dade was contracted to tow the plane to a marina in Homestead.
