Shuttle Service Encouraged For Ft. Lauderdale Beach Party's Guests
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - For those looking for a family-friendly option to take-part in over Memorial Weekend, Ft. Lauderdale beach may have the answer.
On Saturday May 25th, from 10 AM to 10 PM, the City of Fort Lauderdale is hosting their 4th Annual Great American Beach Party.
The free event will be held on the beach at A1A and Las Olas Boulevard. Attendees will find kid-friendly features like bounce houses and face painting, as well as live music for the adults enjoyment.
Visitors and locals are anticipating lots of fun in the sun for the party on the beach.
"It's a good party, there's music and I'm ready to soak up some rays," said Lauren Klug.
Since A1A will be closed from 7 AM to 1 AM, the traffic in the area will be impacted. In addition, the Las Olas Bridge has one lane closed for construction.
"They shut the roads, and it's a party, we want in," said Steve Kantor who is visiting the beach for the first time.
To make it easier for commuters, there is a shuttle service available. Event-goers are encouraged to travel stress-free by way of shuttle.
The schedule of entertainment is meant to accommodate beach-goers of all ages.
As a blast from the past, there will be two performances by the group Boogie Knights, the world's top disco revival show. The band's high energy sets feature chart-topping hits of the disco era from artists including the Bee Gees, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, The Commodores, and Donna Summer.
"We started this tradition a few years ago. We wanted to kick off the summer with your friends and family and have a great day," said Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler.
An added bonus those in attendance this Memorial Holiday weekend, the A1A restoration north of Sunrise Boulevard is nearly complete.
This is a dramatic transformation from last fall when Hurricane Sandy and a Thanksgiving storm battered the seawall and swept away the sidewalk and road.
Now it's hoped a half mile long steel barrier wall will hold back the waves.
"It means a lot to everybody. It's amazing they did fix it as fast as they did," said Sue Ettel.
"Everybody banks on Memorial weekend for business. If they don't have that holiday, it's almost a predictor for the rest of the summer," said Walter Ettel.
"I have to give kudos to the state and county. This is one of those times when everyone pulled together and got in the canoe together and rode in the same director, said Mayor Seiler.
