Mother, daughter shot to death at Miami condo building
MIAMI - Police have identified the suspected gunman in Wednesday's deadly double shooting at a Miami condo building.
The shooting happened around 9 a.m. at the Yolanda Villas condo complex in the 800 block of NW 47th Avenue.
"There were two females that were found unresponsive right in front of their apartment complex door. Further investigation revealed that the suspect arrived at the location and somehow managed to ambush both the mother and daughter," said Miami police Officer Kiara Delva.
Police say the suspected gunman is the estranged ex-boyfriend of the daughter, Isbelsy Olivera, who was 22 years old. He has been identified as 48-year-old Carlos Travieso.
Olivera's mother, Irisbel Cartalla Rivera, was 50 years old.
"Further investigation revealed that the suspect fled in an unknown vehicle and arrived to the West Miami Police Department where he confessed and stated that he just shot and killed two individuals," said Delva.
Investigators are now trying to determine what led to the shooting.
A neighbor said of the mother, "She was a very wonderful lady. She was always very happy and very alegre. A very nice lady. It was unfortunate this happened."
Miami Police spokesman Mike Vega said there is often an increase in these types of crimes at this time of year.
Vega told CBS News Miami's Peter D'Oench that, "November and December is when we usually see an increase in suicides and some domestic violence as well. Everyone is supposed to be happy and cheerful and they see the people around them being happy but they are not happy and this leads them to commit these types of acts."
Alex Piquero, a Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Miami said, "There is a season disorder effect in how people are struggling with respect to financial means or the loss of someone in their lives of the loss of a job and those things seem to congregate together and people react differently to stress and anxiety. I think what we have in society is the lack of civility and people get into arguments and make instantaneous decisions. So people are solving things with guns and not trying to talk things out."
Piquero had an important recommendation.
"At this time of year," he said, "Check in on the people who you care about. You never know what someone is going through, if they have had a bad day or something happened at work. This is the time of year when you want to check up on your colleagues and check up on your friends and family and look at the warning signs."
Travieso has been charged with two counts of first degree murder. He's being held without bond.
