Sheriff's Office Notes Drop In Crime In First Half Of Year

FT LAUDERDALE - While population size and calls for help were up slightly in the first half of this year for the Broward Sheriff's Office compared to last year, the amount of actual crime dropped.
"Reducing crime is crucial to the men and women of the Broward Sheriff's Office," Sheriff Scott Israel said. "We strive to make our community safer and this report reinforces that our efforts are working."
According to the department's records there was an overall drop of 8.8 in the worst type of crimes in the first six months of this year compared to last year.
Sharp decreases were noted in overall violent crime (down 8.2 percent), burglary (down 24.6 percent), robbery (down 7.5 percent), arson (10.5 percent) and aggravated assault/stalking (down 12.1 percent), according to the sheriff's office.
According to the department, the number of arrests was also down; 23.1 percent for adults and 15.2 percent for juveniles.
But it wasn't all good news.
Rape and sexual assaults were up nearly 5 percent, motor vehicle theft were up by 2.5 percent and murder was up by one body; rising from 12 in 2013 to 13 in 2014.
