Judge Allows Mom To See Hospitalized, Jailed Daughter

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – All Lucy Moss wanted was time with her desperately ill daughter.
On Monday, a Broward judge made it possible.
Moss flew to Fort Lauderdale last week after getting word that her 26-year-old daughter was on life support at Broward Health North Medical Center.
Her daughter Kristin Carare was shackled to her hospital bed and breathing through a ventilator. A Broward Sheriff's deputy stood guard.
Carare who has struggled with addiction since she was a teenager had been in the Broward jail since March after being arrested on a drug charge. A judge ordered her to be held without bond on that charge. When she became seriously ill last week the jail transferred her to the hospital in Deerfield Beach.
BSO said Carare's hospital room is an extension of the jail and security regulations must be followed. Still, BSO allowed Moss to visit her daughter twice.
Moss went to court on Sunday to force BSO to allow her additional visits. After two public defenders pleaded with a judge Monday morning, Carare was released on her own recognizance and it allowed Moss to see her ailing daughter.
Despite that, Moss is angry over what she had to go through.
"She almost died. She was on life support and you can't see your daughter," Moss told CBS4's Joan Murray.
Attorney Mark Astor said he wants to know why BSO was firm in their refusal.
"She's not a high risk inmate. We want to know why this mom couldn't see her daughter," said Astor.
A BSO spokesperson said they were not informed of the emergency hearing on Sunday, and could not present their reasons for denying Moss her request for additional visits.
Lucy Moss said she hopes no other parent has to go through what she experienced.
"My daughter's not a criminal. She's an addict. She needs help and for a mother not allowed to see her daughter there's something wrong with that," said Moss.
