Sheriff: Father Fatally Shoots 2 Kids, Himself
PORT ORANGE (CBSMiami/AP) – A central Florida man allegedly shot his three children, killing two and himself, after an argument with his wife.
The Volusia County Sheriff's Office said 52-year-old David Mohney shot and killed his 11-year-old son David Mohney and 14-year-old daughter Savanna Mohney at around 5:11 a.m. on Friday in a neighborhood south of Daytona Beach. Lauren Mohney, 9, was taken to an Orlando hospital with critical injuries.
Cynthia Mohney, 48, said she fled from her husband to a neighbor's home to call for help. The woman told deputies her husband had threatened her with a gun. Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said Cynthia Mohney wasn't injured.
"It's very tough," Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson said at a news conference outside the family's home. "It's basically a cowardly event. If he wants to commit suicide, let him commit suicide. To shoot the children, that's cowardly."
The shooting occurred in a home in the Spruce Creek Farms subdivision of Port Orange, about five miles south of Daytona Beach.
