Sexy "Magic Mike" Dances Into Theaters Friday
MIAMI (CBS4) - When the sun is up, Mike is a charming guy working as many angles as he can to live the American dream.
When the sun goes down, Mike makes magic! He's the star headliner in an all-male review. It's a world actor Channing Tatum, who stars as Magic Mike and produced this film, knows all about first hand. He was a stripper at age 18.
"I'm not proud of it but I'm not ashamed of it, like, not at all," said Tatum. "I mean it was an absolutely bizarre and crazy time in my life that I wouldn't trade for the world," said Tatum.
When director Steven Soderbergh heard about Channing's prior life, The idea for the movie was born.
"I told him I did it and I told him that I always kind of wanted to make a film about it and he's like 'no we're doing it'. And I was like 'ok'. And he was like 'you should write it' and I'm like 'I don't know how to write. I don't do that'. I was like 'my buddy does' and he was like 'he should write it then'," said Channing.
Matthew McConaughey plays Dallas, the club owner. Alex Pettyfer is the new kid with potential moves and then there's Joe Manganiello. Joe plays, "Big" Dick Richie, a guy who needs no props apart from what he was born with.
"I came from an athletic background and in drama school we had a semester of ballet and jazz and i think the jazz is more of the upper body. Male stripping is more about hips," said Manganiello.
For Channing Tatum, he's thankful and introspective that his pet project is now about to be revealed, in more ways than one.
"I can't believe we did it. I can't believe we put it out. I just hope it just goes well," said Tatum.
Magic Mike is rated R and opens in theaters Friday, June 29th.
