Sex Offender Charged With Missing Florida Girl's Death
JACKSONVILLE (CBSMiami/AP) - An AMBER Alert for a missing 8-year-old was cancelled Saturday after her body was found in a wooded area in Jacksonville.
Charish Perriwinkle went missing Friday night after Donald James Smith, 56, befriended the child at a dollar store and then offered to buy them clothes at Wal-Mart, according to Mike Williams of Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Smith took the mother and 8-year-old Charish to Wal-Mart and then told the mother he would buy them a snack at the front of store.
According to authorities, Smith, a registered sex-offender, instead walked out with the child.
Saturday morning, a tip led investigators to the wooded area where they found Charish's body.
Smith, who was released from jail May 31, met with police on Friday in the morning when officers visited to check his address, as required by state law.
