Severe Weather Threat Ends For South Florida
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - After a day of thunderstorms and potential flooding that led to an overnight tornado watch, a series of weather fronts that had promised severe weather moved through South Florida overnight without causing serious damage. The tornado watch was allowed to expire, and the threat of severe weather has ended.
CBS4 Meteorologist Craig Setzer, who monitored the situation throughout the night in the CBS4 Storm Center, said the word of the threat passed through while most people were asleep.
"A Line of quick moving storms raced through the area between 4:45 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.," he said. "A few wind gusts to 45 mph were reported but that was the only effect seen. The rain was brief so no flooding was reported, and with the passing of the storms, the tornado watch was canceled."
Setser said the rest of the day Sunday looks very windy with quick showers, but no threat of severe weather.
The weather is being caused by a series of storm systems, the first of which moved through South Florida overnight.
The weather Saturday caused cancellation of a number of events, including, ironically, Earth Day events planned for a number of communities including North Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Miami Beach, where spokesperson Nanette Rodriguez noted the cancellation was caused, "due to Mother's Nature's pending fury.."
