Severe Weather Possible Saturday
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - While the sun is out and warming the skies Friday morning, the weather could take a turn for the worse over the weekend as a significant severe weather threat exists for Saturday.
A strong storm in the Plain States is diving quickly southward embedded in a fast Jet Stream. The storm will dive uncharacteristically far south tomorrow deep into the Gulf Of Mexico.
Deep moisture that is now gathering in the Southern Gulf Of Mexico will be pulled north and east into South Florida starting after midnight tonight.
Although there are spotty storms around South Florida today and this evening, the main threat for bigger storms exists after midnight, closer to the early morning hours of Saturday. These storms will be potentially severe with winds of 70 mph and even a few tornadoes.
The threat for severe weather and storms will be around all day on Saturday, and although it will not rain all the time, there may be several stormy periods.
The severe weather threat will gradually lessen on Saturday night and as the cold front passes early Sunday the showers will taper off. Sunday will certainly be a better day but it is likely there will be leftover showers at least the first half of the day. Expect gusty west winds on Sunday as the storm moves out. The weather will improve greatly Monday.
The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma has put the area under a Slight Risk for severe weather. The SPC said the forecast is still in flux, but if everything comes together, the atomsphere will be able to produce isolated supercells capable of producing tornadoes.
Sunday will still be wet and unsettled to start and then some drier air should begin to move in late Sunday into early next week.
Once the storm system moves off to our East, rain chance will decrease along with temperatures. Cooler, drier air will lead to lows in the 60s and highs in the upper 70s by Tuesday and Wednesday.
