Several Families Displaced By Deerfield Beach Apartment Fire
DEERFIELD BEACH (CBS4) - A fire at an apartment complex Monday night sent one man to the hospital and forced at least 7 people from their homes.
Five units at the Lime Tree apartments on SE 4th Avenue in Deerfield Beach are damaged and are unlivable. Investigators say three of those units were unoccupied.
The Red Cross is helping the displaced families.
Firefighters say the fire started around 6:30 pm Monday in a downstairs unit. Officials say the man who lives in that apartment suffered burns on his body and was taken to North Broward Medical Center. The extent of his injuries was not known Monday night.
Paulette Souza said the fire forced her and her son from their apartment. They live directly above the unit where the fire started.
Souza said firefighters rescued her cat and several kittens but one kitten has not been located.
"It 's so scary," she said. "I never thought it would affect my apartment."
The Broward Sheriff Fire Marshals Bureau and State Fire Marshals Office are investigating the cause of the fire.
