Service Men & Women Honored On Veteran's Day
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A number of cities honored those who served our country on Sunday, Veteran's Day.
At Miami's Jungle Island, U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen attended a salute to our veterans sponsored by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. Ros-Lehtinen introduced retiring SouthCom General Douglas Fraser.
Miami Beach marked the day with a Veterans Day Parade & Wreath Laying Ceremony including the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team Landing on Field and a flyover by the U.S. Air Force F-16 Mako jetfighters squadron.
In North Miami, city leaders held their annual Veteran's Day event at Griffing Park. The ceremony included remarks by North Miami Vice Mayor Marie Erlande Steril, a 21-gun salute by the North Miami Police Department's Honor Guard and a Presentation of Colors by local veteran's organizations.
In Hallandale Beach, flags were placed on the grave sites of fallen soldiers at the Hallandale Beach cemetery.
In Hollywood, the second annual Veteran's Day Barbecue is being held at T.Y. Park. Mayor Peter Bober and members of the commission joined volunteers to serve a free barbecue lunch to veterans and families. The event also featured a performance by the Florida National Guard's 13th Army Band, an inflatable obstacle course and potato sack races.
In Ft. Lauderdale, a Veteran's Day ceremony on the Riverwalk honored three members of the armed forces from Broward County who were killed in action in Afghanistan since Memorial Day of this year.
Bricks in the name of U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Brodsky of Tamarac, U.S. Army Sgt. Marc Lerner of Sunrise and U.S. Army Warrant Officer Joseph Schiro from Coral Springs were placed in the wall at the Sandy Ninninger statue.
Ft. Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler was the guest speaker.
This Veteran's Day marks the first one since the last U.S. troops left Iraq in December 2011. November 11th also marks the anniversary of the signing of the agreement that ended World War One.
