Senate Approves Bill Which Lowers Auto Registration Fees

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) – A bill which would lower vehicle registration fees has cleared a major hurdle.

On Wednesday, the state's Senate unanimously approved a bill which rolls back automobile registrations fees, owners will pay about $12 less a year. It faces an uncertain future in the House.

The state will make up the lost money — between $220 million and $230 million — by eliminating a tax break to insurance companies. Those companies pay a state tax on insurance premiums but also get a rebate worth 15 percent of the salary paid to their workers.

State lawmakers had increased auto fees in 2009 to help close a multi-billion dollar budget gap.

Since the bill does not have a companion bill in the House, it will have to be assigned to a committee. Since there are few committees scheduled to meet, it may not make it to the House floor for a vote before the end of the session in the beginning of May.
