Sen. Bill Nelson Remains Against Same-Sex Marriage
WASHINGTON (CBSMiami) – There has been a growing chorus of U.S. senators who have recently come out in support of marriage equality, Florida's senior senator is not one of them.
"My personal preference is that marriage is between a man and a woman," Senator Bill Nelson (D-Fl) has been quoted as saying in the last few days.
Nelson's preference is against the grain of Democratic Party and leaves him as just one of nine out of 54 Democratic senators who haven't expressed support for marriage equality.
The nine Democratic senators are: Mark Pryor (AR), Bob Casey (PA), Nelson, Tom Carper (DE), Joe Manchin (WV), Mary Landrieu (WV), Heidi Heitkamp (ND), Joe Donnelly (IN), and Tim Johnson (SD).
Senator Kay Hagan was on the list but endorsed marriage equality on Wednesday as the Supreme Court took up a case seeking to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
