Miami-Dade, Broward Sites Vaccinating Those 12 And Up

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Select vaccination sites are now administering the Pfizer vaccine to children 12 to 17 now that it has received approval from the Centers for Disease Control and the Food and Drug Administration.

In Miami-Dade, 12 and older can receive the vaccine at the Homestead Sports Complex, at 1601 SE 28th Avenue, Tropical Park, Zoo Miami, Hard Rock Stadium, and Harris Field Park in Homestead.

Miami Jackson Senior High, Miami Sunset and North Miami High are also offering the vaccine for children 12 and older as well as their parents

Lauren Kirby Navarro, 12, received the vaccine at Miami Jackson Senior High on Thursday.

She says dealing with the threat of COVID for over a year has been rough.

"It affected what you could do, like being with a large group of friends," she said.

"There is no ID required for adults and children. But a parent or legal guardian must be present and sign a consent form," said Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.

Several children at Hard Rock Stadium said they were excited about getting the first dose. They said not only because they wanted to do the right thing but because that way they could get back to normal classroom life soon.

"All my friends are waiting to get the vaccine, when I talk to them they are pretty excited," said NiNi Zheng.

"The pandemic is a very serious thing, so I think getting the vaccine is important," said Edwin Ballavares.

All state Department of Health-Broward vaccination sites are administering the Pfizer vaccine to individuals ages 12 and older.

"The expansion of age groups eligible to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine allows us to protect our adolescents against COVID-19 and therefore better protect our whole community. The vaccine is safe and effective in both adults and adolescents. DOH-Broward is pleased to offer the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to individuals 12 and older at no cost and without an appointment at all of our fixed and pop-up community vaccination sites." said Florida Department of Health in Broward County's Health Officer, Dr. Paula Thaqi said. "This is an important step towards ending the pandemic."

Walgreens offers same day appointments, as well as walk-in appointments if a time slot is available. Parents or guardians also can utilize Walgreens guest scheduling functionality to book an appointment for their children, which is required for adolescents who are 12 years old.

In order for an individual aged 12-17 years old to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, the parent or guardian must complete the electronic consent form and accompany them with identification (birth certificate, driver's license, passport, state ID) to the site.

The Pfizer vaccine is only available for individuals over the age of 12. The Johnson & Johnson and Moderna vaccines are only available for those over the age of 18.
