Seijas Opponents Celebrate Her Ouster
MIAMI LAKES (CBS4) - Miami-Dade Commissioner Natacha Seijas had never lost an election as commissioner, until Saturday. Swept up in the recall tide that removed Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Alvarez from office, voters in District 13 voted thumbs down by an 88%-12% margin, and opened the door to the first new commissioner in the district since the 90's.
As soon as people in The Billiard Room in Miami Lakes heard that Commissioner Natacha Seijas had been voted out of office, Kevin Morejohn yelled, "the people won!"
Morejohn is a business owner in Miami Lakes and says he has had enough.
"She has promised too many promises. Parks, senior citizens areas, she has done nothing. She wants to do everything for other towns," said Morejohn.
Vanessa Brito is also celebrating. As chairman of Miami Voice, a political action committee, Brito began her campaign to recall Seijas back in mid-October.
"I really cannot believe that so many people, for the first time, have actually come out and said, you know what, I'm done," said Brito.
"Finally, the people of district 13 have restored democracy," said Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi.
CBS4 News has tried reaching Seijas for comment all day Tuesday but she has not returned the calls.
Once Tuesday's votes are certified, Seijas is officially out of office.
