Security Guard Alerts Police To Suspected Miami Beach Burglar

MIAMI BEACH - (CBS4) - Miami Beach Police are crediting a security guard for flagging down a passing officer to alert him about a burglar suspect.

The security guard's "quick thinking" led police to arrest 29-year-old Alberto Zayas who is accused of breaking into several properties in the area around the 2300 block of Pinetree Drive.

Police say that on May 25, the security guard at the Trade Wind Apartments at 2365 Pinetree Drive was viewing the building's security video and saw a man on the video that he recognized as the same man who had allegedly committed several burglaries in the building.

That's when the security guard flagged down a passing officer. Police caught up with Zayas who they say had several clear baggies with traces of crystal meth.

Zayas had been identified as a key suspect in several home burglaries because of video and fingerprints left at the scenes.

Zayas now faces four counts of burglary in unoccupied dwellings and one count of drug paraphernalia with residue and possession of a controlled substance.
