Good Sam Finds Body Of Missing SC Kayaker

DANIA BEACH (CBSMiami/AP) — Crews recovered the body of a missing kayaker south of Port Everglades Sunday.

A Good Samaritan discovered the body of David Lemonds in the water around 2: 30 p.m.

Broward Sheriff's Deputies recovered the boy from the water about 15 minutes later. His body was turned over to the Medical Examiner's office .

His wife told CBS4 her husband was visiting Florida from South Carolina on a diving trip. The 47-year-old was an experienced diver and kayaker.

Authorities say local kayakers saw Lemonds leave John U. Lloyd Beach State Park in Dania Beach on Thursday morning in a 12-foot yellow ocean kayak. Park rangers alerted the Coast Guard on Friday morning after seeing that Lemonds' truck had remained undisturbed overnight.

Coast Guard sea and air crews searched the waters off the Dania Beach park. By Saturday night, the Coast Guard had searched 5,314 square nautical miles.

His family traveled to Florida from South Carolina, hoping to be reunited with him.

Now they will return with his body.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials are investigating the incident.
