Scottish Tennis Star Andy Murray Has Adopted Miami As 2nd Home
MIAMI (CBS4) - Tennis star Andy Murray has made Miami his home away from home.
"I come here to do my off-season training in December, and then I also come in the summer after Wimbledon," Murray told CBS4 Sports anchor Jim Berry.
Murray often trains in the tennis stadium at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne, site of the Sony Open in March.
He said Miami is the perfect place to re-boot. When he's not grinding it out on the court, Murray says he likes to jet ski or attend Miami Heat basketball games.
Like Heat star LeBron James, Murray had a breakout year in 2012. He won an Olympic gold medal, and then captured his first Grand Slam title at the US Open.
Murray admits it took away some of the pressure.
"You get asked the same questions over and over and you're called a choker," said Murray. "In a way it does add more pressure but hearing those things can make you stronger."
Murray now seems more comfortable with his fan base. He even posted a message of support on Facebook after the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton, Connecticut in which 26 people, most of the elementary school students, were killed.
Murray survived a similar scare during his childhood in Scotland. 16 people died at his school Murray was only 8 years old.
"Our community is extremely strong," said Murray. "You know if the masses come together and try to create a positive atmosphere that's the best way to deal with it, but it's not easy. "
His next stop on the tennis circuit is Abu Dhabi. Afterwards, it's on Down Under for the Australian Open which begins in mid-January.
