Scott To Attend Latin Builders Association Meeting, Tour Southcom
MIAMI (CBS4)- Governor Rick Scott has a full schedule in South Florida on Friday.
Scott made a stop at the grand opening for one of the first America's Best Contacts & Eyeglasses locations in Florida at 10 a.m. The store, located at 8430 Mills Drive in Kendall, is one of two stores that opened in January.
The company plans to open 20 stores throughout Florida during 2012, a move that's expected to create 200 jobs statewide for the year.
On Thursday, a bipartisan pair of lawmakers gave a warm reception to Scott's proposal for a $50,000 exemption from the tangible personal property tax on businesses. The move, which would require a constitutional amendment, would slice more than 156,000 taxpayers from the rolls -- about 49 percent of those who currently pay it.
On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported that Amazon.com is promising to bring between 2,500 jobs and 3,000 jobs to Florida if state lawmakers and Scott agree to a deal that would exempt the online retailer from collecting sales taxes for the next two years.
The retail giant, which has offered similar deals in other states, has told top state officials that it wants to spend as much as $200 million on two distribution centers but only if it can get a guarantee regarding taxes.
On Friday, Scott is scheduled to attend media interviews before heading to the Latin Builders Association's monthly meeting, which begins at noon, at the Hilton in downtown Miami.
Come 1:30 p.m. Scott will head to the United States Southern Command in Doral for a tour of the facility. He's expected to wrap up at 6 p.m.
Scott concludes his day with dinner with general Douglas Fraser, Commander of U.S. Southern Command at 7 p.m.
