School Board Expected To Approve Sex Case Settlement
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - The family of a former Blanche Ely High School student who was sexually assaulted by one of her teachers may find out Tuesday whether the Broward School Board will approve a one million dollar settlement.
The assault happened in March, 2007. The girl, who was 15-years-old at the time, told investigators that Conraad Hoever, 47, attacked her when she went back to his classroom to retrieve her cell phone.
Hoever, who was charged with sexual battery, was convicted of sexual molestation and sentenced to 15 years.
The girl's family, who claims the school district failed to protect her, sued the school district in federal court so they win damages above the state liability cap of $200 thousand. In their suit, they point to two separate occasions in the 2004-2005 school year two different female students at Blanche Ely complained to school officials that Hoever sexually assaulted them.
After attending mediation sessions with attorneys for the girl's family, district staffers recommended that the board approve the $1 million settlement.
