Scholarship Fund Created To Honor UM Grad Killed In Crash
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Just two days after graduating from the University of Miami, Dino Ghilotti's life came to an abrupt end after the car he was riding in crashed. To honor the young man's life, a scholarship has been set up in Dino's name.
"He had such a fun loving spirit. He enjoyed life," said Dino's mother, Nancy. "He had 22 turns around the sun and I wish he would've had 100, but the 22 turns he had were unbelievable."
On May 12th Dino, 22, was the passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend Allison Meyer. The car, a BMW, collided with another BMW, according to Coral Gables Police, on Bird Road at San Amaro Drive.
Nancy was devastated by the news of her son's death on the morning of Mother's Day.
In the wake of her son's death, the Dino Richard Ghilotti Motta Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in an effort to honor her son's short but vibrant life.
"I wanted to continue his legacy and do that with a scholarship fund to help another young man or woman," said Nancy.
As said by those that knew Dino, he was a young man of many talents.
"He was caring and kind, generous, hard-working, athletic, artistic, studious. I mean he had five points to every star," said Meyer, Dino's girlfriend.
Dino's mom hopes the scholarship goes to a young woman or man "who's a scholar and athlete that's an artist, somebody that's inclusive."
So far they have raised more than $160,000 for the scholarship fund.
"The day that we hand out the first scholarship is the day I know I will cry a lot," said Nancy.
