Shelters Offer Homeless Warm Place For The Night
FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - With temperatures forecast to fall into the low 30s Monday night into Tuesday morning, with possible 'feels like' temperatures in the 20s, homeless shelters across South Florida have gone into cold weather mode.
The Miami Rescue Mission knows they can't help everyone but they'll do what they can for those who come to them for help including those who don't want it.
"Yes, I believe I enjoy it outside more than indoors," said Marshall Ragsdale.
That's the challenge may homeless advocates face as they scour the streets and encourage people like Ragsdale not to ignore the weather warnings.
The Miami Rescue Mission said their resources are stretched to their maximum now as they've been at full capacity for the last couple of days and don't have everything they need like winter coats, jackets, sheets and, of course, blankets."
In Broward, the Salvation Army will open their doors Monday night to anyone who needs a warm place to stay. Food and hot drinks will be served.
"No one will be turned away," said Area Commander Major Gene Hogg.
On a normal night, the Salvation Army provides shelter for 160 people. Monday and Tuesday nights they are expecting a lot more and needs the public's help to provide for them.
"Once again we are in urgent need of blankets to give to the men, women and children who do not have a place to live. We will be happy to accept new or used blankets in clean and good condition," said Hogg.
The Salvation Army needs about 50 blankets that they can distribute to the area's homeless population.
